Abstract

This article explores the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the labor movement in the United States. It discusses a case where a university dean suggested using AI to replace striking graduate student teaching assistants, which was met with opposition from the student union. The article also examines how AI is being used in industries like fast-food and logistics to replace workers and weaken their bargaining power. It emphasizes the importance of government regulations to safeguard workers and ensure fair treatment in the face of AI advancements. Unions in the entertainment industry, such as the WGA and SAG-AFTRA, have been fighting against the negative effects of AI on workers, securing contracts that regulate its use and protect compensation and credits. Other unions, like the CWA and Teamsters, are also advocating for worker input and protections in AI utilization. [Extracted from the article]
