Abstract

The article discusses the lasting impact of the 1984 anti-Sikh pogrom in India, where thousands of Sikhs were killed following the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards. The pogrom revealed the vulnerability of the Sikh community and the complicity of Hindu organizations and institutions in the violence. Despite attempts at reconciliation and justice, many Sikhs still harbor grievances against the Indian state. The article also explores the growing disenchantment among Sikhs with mainstream political parties and the labeling of Sikhs as Khalistanis, particularly during the 2020-2021 farmer protests. The Sikh diaspora population also continues to be affected by the events of 1984, with divisions arising over the killing of a Canadian Sikh activist. The article concludes by emphasizing the need for the Indian state to address the grievances of the Sikh community and prevent further alienation. [Extracted from the article]
