Abstract

Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a public health issue that needs to be addressed urgently. Patients are with decreased estrogen level, decreased estrogen receptor α (ERα) expression level, decreased osteoblast function, increased osteoclast activity, and imbalance of bone metabolic. ERα plays an important role in the occurrence and development of PMOP. In this paper, literature in the field of osteoporosis in recent ten years (2013-2023) are retrieved from PubMed, Web of Science, and CNKI. The role of ERα in bone mesenchymal stem cells, osteoblast progenitors, osteoblast progenitors, mature osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes is summarized. The relevant anti-PMOP mechanism of ERα is expounded based on an example of icariin, a flavonoid component that significantly relieves PMOP. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
