Abstract

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has issued urgent recommendations to Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regarding a potential hazard in the rudder system of approximately 350 Boeing 737 models currently in operation. The NTSB's recommendations come after an incident in which cockpit pedals controlling the rudder became stuck on a United Airlines 737 MAX. While the recommendations do not necessarily mean the affected planes will be taken out of service, the FAA has accepted the NTSB's recommendations and will convene an internal panel to determine corrective actions. Boeing is reviewing the recommendations and will develop additional guidance for pilots. The NTSB has also recommended that the FAA consider removing certain rudder system components made by Collins Aerospace and alert foreign counterparts to take similar actions.
