Abstract
- This paper develops a theoretical account of how competitive elections might produce accountability in the subnational Mexican context. I argue that only two logical mechanisms exist: party sanctioning, in which the electorate casts judgment on parties based on the past performance of their office-holders, and candidate selection, in which the vote is based on anticipated future performance of candidates.
