Abstract

Nigerian online performance humour in different forms of comedy skits deploys a range of linguistic resources. However, existing conceptualisations of Nigerian online comedy skits ignore the significance of the language forms to the genre. In this paper, I argue that given the Nigerian multilingual context with the domineering presence of the English language, the pervasive use of ungrammatical English utterances in online comedy skits is an intentional strategy meant to contextualise the scripted humorous narratives as interactions with the viewers. Ungrammatical utterances are forms of deliberate language play which, together with digital play, facilitate the recipients’ participation in the performance of online humour in the Nigerian ESL multilingual context.
