Abstract

"The Early Modern Jesuit Attitude towards Hindu and Ethiopian Strains of Asceticism" by Leonardo Cohen examines how Jesuits engaged with non-Catholic ascetic traditions in Ethiopia and India. The book explores the Jesuits' attempts to convert others to Catholicism and their encounters with ascetic practices that challenged their beliefs. It highlights the Jesuits' complex and ambivalent response to these traditions, as they found elements both attractive and confounding. The book also considers the cultural and political context in which the Jesuits operated. This text is a review of "Missionizing on the Edge: Religion and Power in the Jesuit Missions of Spanish Amazonia" by Francismar Alex Lopes de Carvalho, which focuses on the daily lives of Indigenous peoples in the Amazon Jesuit missions and compares them to missions in other regions. The book emphasizes the Indigenous responses to missionary settlement and their negotiations of their own Christianization, taking an intercultural and interreligious perspective. The review commends the book for its groundbreaking contribution to the study of religious asceticism within Jesuit studies. [Extracted from the article]
