Abstract
- Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has decided to scrap a contract for a gunfire-spotting technology called ShotSpotter, which has been credited with saving hundreds of lives. The technology uses acoustic technology to detect gunfire and dispatches law enforcement to the scene before 911 calls come in. The University of Chicago Crime Lab found that ShotSpotter likely saves about 85 lives a year. However, Mayor Johnson has refused to renew the contract, calling it a waste of money, and there are concerns that his decision may be influenced by criticisms that the technology perpetuates "over-policing and unjustified surveillance" in minority neighborhoods. The City Council has voted in favor of giving the Chicago Police Superintendent the power to override the mayor's decision, and some council members are threatening legal action to keep ShotSpotter.
