Abstract
- The author examines the image of snake woman as an objet d'art in A. S. Byatt's short stories "Art Work" from "The Matisse Stories" and "A Lamia in the Cévennes" from "Elementals: Stories of Fire and Ice." Topics include comments on the metaphorical representation of the snake women in both stories, a critique of Bryatt's description of Mrs. Brown's sculpture in "Art Work," and an analysis of the centrality of Lamia's metamorphosis into a voluptuous woman in "A Lamia in the Cévennes."
