Abstract
- A study published in Vaccine suggests that the combination of post-infection COVID-19 seropositivity and COVID-19 vaccination may be linked to the development of severe heart failure and cardiogenic shock after a heart attack. The study, conducted in Spain, examined patients admitted to the hospital with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) or non-ST-elevation MI (NSTEMI). Within six months post-heart attack, 9.7% of patients experienced a major adverse cardiac event, with a 6-month mortality rate of 5.3%. Patients with STEMI who had received COVID-19 vaccination and were COVID seropositive had a higher risk of severe heart failure. However, the study design does not allow for a determination of whether vaccinated patients with positive SARS-CoV-2 serology had an increased risk of heart attack. [Extracted from the article]
