Abstract

The 34th Annual Ig Nobel prizes were recently awarded at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The awards celebrate surprising and humorous achievements that also provoke thought. This year's winners included B.F. Skinner, who received the peace prize posthumously for his experiments using pigeons to guide missile flight paths. Other winners explored topics such as plants imitating artificial plants, the direction of hair whorls, mammals breathing through their anus, the probability of a flipped coin landing on the same side, the effectiveness of fake medicine with painful side effects, the swimming abilities of a dead trout, separating drunk and sober worms, the recordkeeping of supercentenarians, and how cows spill their milk.
