Abstract

The article presents a descriptive analysis of labor indicators in Venezuela based on the results of the 2023 Living Conditions Survey (ENCOVI). It highlights the evolution of economic activity, employment, and wages indicators. It is mentioned that the Institute of Economic and Social Research of the Andrés Bello Catholic University has been studying these indicators since 2014. The economic activity rate in Venezuela has stabilized around 56%, below the regional average. The economically inactive population has experienced changes due to forced migration and premature aging. Employment has increased in 2023 but remains below 2016 levels. Unemployment has decreased, indicating an increase in informality and a decrease in job search. Most workers are concentrated in the tertiary sector, especially in trade and services. The trend towards informalization of employment has continued, with an increase in precarious jobs and a decrease in formal jobs. The survey also reveals data on labor formality in Venezuela, such as the percentage of respondents receiving a food bonus, having a signed employment contract, having mandatory social security deductions, working in a company with more than 5 employees, receiving paid vacations, and having paid sick leave. A statistical history of the minimum wage and food bonus from 2008 to the present date is also provided. The article also explains terms related to economic and labor indicators in Venezuela and mentions the monetary revaluations of the Bolivar and the decree of a general economic war bonus.
