Abstract
- Measuring higher-order thinking skills involves assessing an individual's capacity to engage in processes such as reasoning, analysis, evaluation, and creative idea generation to solve problems and make informed decisions. These instruments play a crucial role in cultivating students' aptitude and competence, enabling their adaptation to the complexities of the 21st century. However, a gap exists in measuring higher-order thinking skills in the context of mathematics education in Indonesia, as current instruments primarily focus on evaluating formula comprehension and application. Therefore, substantiating the construct validity of items within the high-level thinking skills instrument in mathematics becomes imperative. This study introduces six dimensions in formulating higher-order thinking skill items for mathematics, encompassing logic, reasoning, analysis, evaluation, creation, and decision-making proficiencies. The primary objective of this research is to scrutinize the construct validity of this instrument. Employing a design and development framework, data were collected through assessments administered to 284 junior high school students across Indonesia. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was employed for data analysis, utilizing the R software. The outcomes underscore the significance of 20 out of the 25 items, as they exhibit unidimensionality and attain a T-Value exceeding 1.96 for the loading factor. This finding substantiates that the collected data accurately measure the construct of higher-order thinking skills in mathematics, thereby yielding a substantial impact. In essence, this study highlights the pivotal role of these instruments in fostering advanced cognitive capabilities, paving the way for students' effective engagement with complex problem-solving scenarios and decision-making challenges.
