Abstract

The article discusses the need to understand the underlying factors contributing to unsustainable human behavior in order to comprehensively address sustainability transformations. The authors argue that while knowledge alone is insufficient to drive sustainable actions, values play a crucial role in shaping behavior. They question the concept of "universal values" proposed by O'Brien et al., suggesting that social priorities and values may be a root cause of unsustainable development. The authors advocate for an interdisciplinary approach to understanding the reasons behind unsustainable behavior and emphasize the importance of integrating social preferences into sustainability transformations.
