Abstract

This article discusses the innovation and quality of care provided by the Maternity cardiology team in managing pregnant women with cardiac disease. The team has developed a regional referral pathway and a structured electronic multidisciplinary care plan for labor, which includes recommendations on mode of delivery, care modifications, and medication management. They have also introduced maternal echocardiography in the clinic to reduce repeat visits. Over 13 years, the team has provided multi-professional care to 848 women from 14 different hospitals, improving communication and interdisciplinary working. The article concludes that the shared discussion and clear forward planning about care in labor have helped improve the safety and quality of service for high-risk women.
