Abstract

This article reports that the Engine Alliance's GP7200 program for the Airbus A380 is two-thirds of the way through its certification effort and on schedule to complete icing/water ingestion, redline and 1,000hr, cycle endurance tests next month to stay on track for certification by the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration. As thrice-weekly flights continue from General Electric's Flight Test Operations center in California, Engine Alliance managers say they could score an upset against rival Rolls-Royce if Singapore Airlines Ltd. follows through on a second-phase order for the 555-seat airplane, following a recent request for proposals for new large aircraft. Engine Alliance and Rolls-Royce each have six of the 12 A380 customers that have made engine choices.
