Abstract

Initial teacher education aims to teach how to teach. To this end, it has been proposed that programs formally incorporate opportunities for understanding and training in pedagogical practices, both in courses and in the field. This study aims to explore the planning, execution, and contribution to professional training of the incorporation of opportunities for learning pedagogical practice (OLP) in courses offered on the university campus. A descriptive study was conducted in three teacher training programs: pre-school, primary, and secondary education. First, planned OLPs were identified by analysing the syllabus of 72 courses. Then, the perception of executed OLPs was examined by surveying 231 student teachers. Finally, the contribution of OLPs to professional training was investigated by interviewing 8 student teachers. The most planned OLPs by teacher educators were planning learning experiences and simulating what a teacher does during a learning experience. The latter was the most frequently executed OLP by the student teachers, who acknowledged that simulations allow them to: 1) apply the content, 2) learn from mistakes, 3) practice metacognitive monitoring and self-assessment, and 4) approach the complexity of teaching. The findings of this research can be used by training institutions to support the incorporation and design the implementation of OLP teaching from the first year of the training program, with particular emphasis on simulating what a teacher does before and during a learning experience.
