Abstract

In June, Kenya experienced a wave of violence and repression as security forces killed protesters who were opposing new taxes and government excesses. President William Ruto labeled the protests as "treasonous" and directed security forces to use force. The protests were sparked by a new finance bill that imposed punitive taxes on essential goods while allocating funds for extravagant expenditures. The protests were led by a new generation of Kenyans who are disillusioned with the political class and the lack of job opportunities. The repression has damaged Kenya's fragile democracy and strained the social contract between the government and its citizens. The international community, including the United States, must prioritize human rights and democracy in their engagement with Kenya. The violence in Kenya also highlights the impact of a failed international finance system that perpetuates inequality and forces governments to prioritize debt repayment over the well-being of their people.
