Abstract

The article discusses the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT) and its follow-up study, the Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications (EDIC). It explains how the DCCT demonstrated that intensive treatment of type 1 diabetes reduced the risk of microvascular complications, such as retinopathy, neuropathy, and albuminuria. However, it also found that intensive treatment had adverse effects, including an increase in severe hypoglycemia. The EDIC study showed that the benefits of intensive treatment persisted over time, leading to reductions in severe complications and mortality. The findings of these studies have greatly influenced diabetes treatment guidelines and improved outcomes for people with type 1 diabetes. [Extracted from the article]
