Distance education has evolved significantly since its inception, driven by advances in information technology (IT). This article explores in detail the historical evolution of technologies used in distance education, from traditional methods to current innovations. It discusses changes from the use of postal mail and printed materials to the advent of e-learning platforms, and looks at the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The article also examines how these technologies have transformed accessibility and educational quality. Case studies from different countries, such as Colombia, Brazil, and the United States, are included to illustrate how these innovations have been implemented and adapted in various contexts. Through these examples, the influence of IT in improving distance education is highlighted and future projections are discussed, including the potential of hybrid education and the integration of new emerging technologies.
