Abstract

The media is full of reports on how to deal with a "sugar addiction", which doesn't just affect overweight people. Health experts have been warning for years and calling for appropriate measures to protect consumers from foods containing too much sugar. On the one hand, the hidden sugar that lies behind many, sometimes harmless-sounding names is problematic. On the other hand, some people consciously consume large quantities even though they are aware of the long-term health-damaging effects of sugar. Similar to substance addiction, they feel like they are losing control over their eating behavior and have to give in to strong cravings. It has been scientifically proven now, that regular consumption of sugar changes the brain. However, there is criticism of the theory that sugar can be just as addictive as alcohol or drugs.
