The format of the UEFA Champions League, one of the most prestigious competitions in association football, will see a fundamental change from the 2024/2025 season. A declared aim of the reform is improving competitive balance, supported by the previous literature that found a significant decline in the competitive balance of the UEFA Champions League group stage over the recent decades. We introduce alternative measures for both ex ante and ex post competitive balance. The former is based on the Elo ratings of the clubs, while the latter compares the final group ranking to the seeding of the teams used for the group draw.
