Abstract

Small island nations, such as the Maldives, are excessively affected by climate change and rising sea levels. The transportation sector which is reliant on imported fossil fuels, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbates environmental degradation. Electric vehicles present an opportunity to mitigate these impacts by reducing emissions and reliance on imported fuels, thus enhancing overall environmental sustainability. However, overcoming infrastructure limitations, adapting to technological challenges, and implementing supportive policy frameworks are essential steps towards realizing the full potential of EVs in these unique environments. The three most popular types of electric vehicles are battery electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. This study demonstrated the practical efficiency and performance analysis of a prototyped Electric vehicle for Maldivian context taking into account the solar irradiation and road infrastructure. Testing of the prototype, developed, reveals promising driving range capabilities. Doubling the range is possible with the appropriate solar panel size, emphasizing the importance of minimizing size and weight for optimal efficiency. Integration of solar panel had also shown to reduce the need for frequent recharging. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
