Abstract

This paper is structured into two main sections. Part one argues that bioethics originally emerged due to contributions of A. Stöhr between 1910 and 1917. It presents a framework and outlines the main lines of though for this origin. According to Stöhr, bioethics involves a twofold approach: avoiding or diminishing pain and suffering, while increasing pleasure and joy. It is sense, bioethics is linked to the arts, letters, and culture. This paper outlines an archeology of bioethics, which differs significantly from a history of bioethics, drawing on M. Foucault as a reference. Part two is assesses Stöhr’s contributions within the broader landscape of current bioethics studies. The paper concludes with some final observations.
