Abstract: Background: Section 64 of the German Criminal code (StGB) which rules the admission of convicted individuals with substance use disorders to forensic hospitals has been revised (1.10.2023) and is more restrictive than the previous legislation. This brings with it a number of innovations for psychiatric experts and clinicians. Aim: Significant innovations for forensic experts are presented. For example, they must assess the diagnosis and severity of a substance use disorder, its relevance for the conviction and the prospects of possible treatment interventions. Clinical and forensic implications of these changes are discussed. Conclusion: The amendment will lead to considerable changes in psychiatric assessment and case law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
