Abstract

More than 1 billion birds in the US die from colliding with buildings every year, a significant increase from previous estimates. The main causes of these collisions are the disorienting light from buildings at night and confusing reflections from glass during the day. Contrary to earlier studies, which only counted dead birds on the ground, this analysis also includes birds that survived collisions but later died during rehabilitation care. The study emphasizes the global threat of building collisions and suggests that bird-proofing windows by turning off lights at night or adding glass decals can help save birds from fatal crashes.
