Abstract

Plastic recycling is not as effective as it is often portrayed to be. While recycling has been promoted as a solution to the plastic crisis, the reality is that not all plastics can be recycled, and the process is complex and limited. Only about 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled, with the majority ending up in landfills or the natural environment. The plastic waste import market has shifted to Southeast Asian nations, causing environmental crises in those countries. While there are some promising developments, such as fungi and bacteria that can break down plastic, sustainable solutions on a wide scale are still lacking. In the meantime, the best approach is to reduce plastic use whenever possible. [Extracted from the article]
