Abstract

The coyote (Canis latrans) is a generalist species capable of inhabiting urban environments. Although its presence is common in some cities in the United States, it has yet to be recorded in Mexican cities. This report presents the first sighting of a coyote in Villahermosa, Tabasco, obtained from sightings and photographs of a female recorded on several occasions in April and May of 2023 at a site located 2.3 km inside the city. The coyote's origin prior to inhabiting the urban area of Villahermosa is still being determined. Still, its presence in the area for 10 months indicates that conditions are suitable for some coyote individuals to live in urban areas of Mexico. coyotes in urban areas could trigger conflicts with residents, as they may be perceived as threats to human and pet safety. Furthermore, interactions with dogs in urban areas could facilitate the spread of diseases to the wild environment where coyotes may be moving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
