Abstract
- This article explores the use of mechanical circulatory supports (MCS), specifically left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), in the treatment of advanced heart failure. It highlights the high mortality rates associated with heart failure, particularly among younger individuals, and the increasing incidence of cardiogenic shock. The article discusses the variation in LVAD implantation rates across European countries and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on implantation activity. It also addresses factors that may contribute to the lack of global implementation of LVADs, including concerns about the percutaneous power cable and the risk of infection. The article suggests that improving the network structure, educating practitioners, and redefining the role of LVADs in accessing transplantation are necessary to reduce mortality among young heart failure patients.
