Abstract

The article discusses the evolution of automation architecture and the drivers behind it. The Chief Technology Officer at Emerson, Peter Zornio, explains that the current automation architecture has remained largely unchanged since the 1990s and that it is time to take advantage of advancements in IT computing, such as the cloud and analytics. Boundless automation, which involves integrated data and contextualized analytics, can be adopted for both new construction and existing operations. Technical differences in this architecture include new field connectivity technology and the use of wireless devices. The article also highlights the importance of unified data and the relationship between artificial intelligence (AI) and boundless automation. Ultimately, the goal is to make data more accessible and convert it into actionable insights. [Extracted from the article]
