Abstract

This article, titled "Lisa's Story," recounts the experiences of Lisa's husband who suffered from heart failure and underwent treatment with an LVAD (left ventricular assist device). The LVAD significantly impacted his quality of life, preventing him from engaging in activities he enjoyed and causing physical and emotional suffering. After a lengthy process involving an ethics consultation, the husband was eventually granted permission to have the LVAD deactivated, allowing him to die from his underlying heart failure. The article highlights the importance of ethics consultations in helping patients and families navigate difficult end-of-life decisions and calls for increased awareness and availability of such services in healthcare settings.
