Abstract
- Coffee is a commercial crop appropriated by the Indigenous communities of the Altos of Chiapas. In particular, In the mid-twentieth century, the inhabitants of Sibanicjá Pocolum, from the community of Tenejapa, began to temporarily migrate to the coffee farms of Soconusco, in southern Chiapas. Them, through their work, they acquired knowledge about the management of coffee cultivation, its techniques, and its instruments. The objective of this study is to understand how the knowledge and cultural practices of Mayan origin guided the process of cultural appropriation of the crop. 25 in-depth interviews were applied to various social actors such as the council of tsumbajeletik elders (sowers of life), two presidents of the organizations Kulaktik and Batsi Winiki, the traditional choir group, the director of the SADER of the Altos region, the parish priest from Tenejapa and coffee producers. The results obtained identify that local knowledge and practices in coffee cultivation have their origin in the ancient practices of milpa cultivation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
