This article examines the horror of forced disappearance as depicted in the novels La Sombra de Orión and Recuerdos del río volador. It analyzes how the horror is not limited to the violence inflicted on the bodies or the perceived inadequacy of language to communicate the experience but is also revealed in the suspended mourning of the victims’ relatives. Therefore, the importance of memory devices such as photography, art, and literature to capture historical events and periods is highlighted, but also to access a language that allows symbolic processes crucial for victim’s reparation. The contribution of these novels to the current narrative is significant for their historical and literary richness, and, at the same time, for the discussion they raise about memory in territories affected by the dynamics of violence.
