Abstract

The Portuguese surrealists were inquisitive observers of the artistic proposals of the French surrealist movement and absorbed the main principles of surrealist aesthetics mainly in the 40s and 50s of the 20th century. This study aims to show how Portuguese artists created their own aesthetic specificities, despite the culturally conservative context of Salazar’s totalitarian regime, which limited their creative freedom. Attention will be paid to the different strategies used by Portuguese surrealists to configure their productions, which were supported by the attention given to the ‘real everyday life’, by the use of the grotesque, and also by their play with liminality. It will be described how these modalities design a “poetics of ligature”, under which the surrealists constructed their works of art. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
