Abstract

This document is a reply to a comment on a study about venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA-ECMO) outcomes in immunocompromised patients. The authors discuss the challenges of determining the cause of death in critically ill patients, particularly those with refractory cardiogenic shock. They present data from their study, which found that multiple organ failure (MOF) was the most common cause of death in these patients. They also address concerns about the inclusion of immunocompromised patients in the study and the limitations of their retrospective design. The authors suggest that their findings can help inform decisions about the use of VA-ECMO in immunocompromised patients with cardiogenic shock. [Extracted from the article]
