Abstract

The article presents a dossier on the sociology of crime and violence in Latin America. The studies are based on empirical research in various cities and territories of the region, seeking to explain criminal violence and its relationship with different theories. Aspects such as population survival strategies, citizen organization, the relationship with local authorities, and the impact of criminal organizations on cities are analyzed. The studies also examine social control in participation in acts of violence and risky behaviors in young people in Mexico City, how the Brazilian academy addresses insecurity and human rights violations, transnational organized crime in the Andean countries, the impact of the pandemic on drug trafficking and associated violence in Colombia, and how a criminal group can produce legitimacy from illegality in Mexico.
