Abstract

Sodium butyrate (SB) is an organic compound that undergoes specific biochemical processes in animals to dissociate into butyrate ions (C4H7O2 -) and sodium ions (Na+). Both of these ions play a crucial role in the animal body. Butyric acid is the main component of SB that exerts its effects. It is involved in many key biochemical reactions and is indispensable for maintaining the normal physiological functions of animals. SB has various biological functions, such as promoting body growth, regulating intestinal health, improving the diversity of gastrointestinal microbiota, and exerting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It plays an important role in improving the intestinal morphological structure, regulating the balance of gut microbiota, inhibiting the expression of pro-inflammatory factors, enhancing immune function, and protecting the intestinal barrier. As an alternative to antibiotics, SB has a broad application prospect in the feed of ruminant animals. The article mainly reviews the biological functions of SB, its absorption and metabolism, and the research progress of SB application in ruminants, aiming to provide a reference for the efficient application and promotion of SB in the field of ruminant production.
