Abstract

Hyponatremia is a frequently encountered electrolyte disorder in preoperative patient preparation before craniotomy and is directly related to morbidity and mortality. Therefore, rapid and accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of hyponatremia is of great importance. The diagnosis of reset osmostat syndrome, which is one of the causes of hyponatremia in patients with intracranial pathology, may be challenging due to the asymptomatic nature of the syndrome. The underlying pathophysiology of this syndrome is that the set point of the physiological range in which antidiuretic hormone release is stimulated is altered due to pathologies such as intracranial mass, old age and malignancy. Treatment is primarily focused on eliminating the underlying disorder. Accurate diagnosis in patients with intracranial pathology is essential for selecting the most appropriate hyponatremia treatment strategy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
