Abstract

Ramon Margalef, a major figure in the development of ecology, is featured in this article as a pioneer of plankton research. While he is known for his contributions to ecological theory, this article focuses on his work as a naturalist and planktologist. Margalef's early life and career are highlighted, including his self-taught approach to studying insects and plants, his experiences during the Spanish Civil War, and his publications on freshwater and marine flora and fauna. Margalef's significant contributions to the study of marine plankton, including his work on mixoplankton and microzooplankton, are also mentioned. Despite retiring in 1993, Margalef continued to work and left behind a large body of scientific publications. The article concludes by emphasizing the value of field work and hands-on research in the study of plankton. [Extracted from the article]
