Abstract

This document discusses the importance of treating agro-food and urban wastes in order to combat environmental degradation and promote economic growth, environmental sustainability, and public health. It introduces the concept of a circular economy, which focuses on sharing, reusing, repairing, and recycling in a closed loop. The document highlights the need for proper waste management, as evidenced by statistics on waste recycling rates in the European Union and OECD countries. The document also presents the main results of a special issue on sustainable agriculture and waste treatment, including the valorization of agro-food waste and the human perception of the circular economy paradigm. The results demonstrate various methods of extracting value from waste and minimizing environmental impact, such as using fish effluents as fertilizer, recycling agricultural waste, producing biomethane from agricultural waste, and producing enzymes from agro-industrial waste. The document also discusses the perspectives of stakeholders on organic food waste, emphasizing the need for behavioral changes, policies, and cooperation among all stakeholders. Overall, embracing circular economy-based approaches can lead to greater environmental and economic sustainability. [Extracted from the article]
