Abstract

A new polystyrene-supported Schiff base resin, o-hydroxyacetophenonediethylenetriamine-polystyrene (PS-HAPDA), has been synthesized via a reaction between the commercially available chloromethyl polystyrene polymer and the Schiff base o-hydroxyacetophenonediethylenetriamine (HAPDA). The structure of the synthesized polymer has been determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetry differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA). The chelating properties of the new polymer toward some divalent metal ions were studied by a batch equilibration technique under different experimental conditions. Results revealed that the metal-ion uptake follows the order Cu+2 > Zn+2 > Ni+2 > Co+2 > Pb+2. The antibacterial activity of complexed PS-HAPDA was tested against Gram-negative strains and Gram-positive strains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
