Abstract
- This article, published in the journal Pediatric Anesthesia, discusses the use of point of care ultrasound to aid in the decision of deep extubation for a patient with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) who is at risk for aspiration. The case study involves an 18-year-old patient with a history of autism, gastroesophageal reflux, hiatal hernia, obesity, and HOCM who underwent dental restoration under general anesthesia. Prior to emergence, the patient's stomach was suctioned and ultrasound of the gastric antrum was performed to assess gastric volume. Based on the findings, a deep extubation was performed, and the patient had no further complications. The article highlights the utility of gastric antrum ultrasound as an aspiration risk assessment tool in patients with HOCM. [Extracted from the article]
