This paper aims firstly to carry out a study of the context and situation of Spanish rural libraries by analyzing the conditions of the environment in which they are located, and their essential role as a dynamic agent of the sociocultural context at the local level. Secondly, we move on to a section focused on making a diagnosis of rural libraries in Andalusia —considering those located in towns with a population under 5000 inhabitants, with the aim of discovering the situation of library services in the less populated areas of Andalusia.
