Abstract

Toxic "forever chemicals" known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are being released into the air from landfills in Florida, according to a study published in Environmental Science & Technology Letters. The amount of PFAS detected in the gas emitted by the landfills is comparable to or even greater than the amount found in the liquid runoff from the waste. PFAS have been linked to various health issues, including cancer and developmental problems in children. The study highlights the need for more efficient systems to collect and treat landfill gas to prevent the release of PFAS into the environment. [Extracted from the article]
