Abstract

The blast-proof structures are the leading demand for the current scenario to mitigate the effect of air blast. The honeycomb cell wall thickness plays a essential role in establishing the performance effectiveness of honeycomb sandwich panels in the application of air blast mitigation. Hence, in this numerical study, the effect of cell wall thickness on the dynamic response of honeycomb sandwich panels under air blast loadings was investigated. The stand-off distance (SoD) in the whole study was kept at 100 mm, and the mass of TNT explosive varied from 0.5 to 2 kg. To estimate the blast mitigation of the sandwich panels, the deflections of the center point of the face sheets, radial deflection of the face sheets, energy absorption by the sandwich panel, energy dissipation by each component of the sandwich panel due to plastic deformation, and core crushing of the sandwich panel were used for comparisons. The obtained results showed that the thicker cell-walled honeycombs significantly improved blast mitigation in terms of small face deflection, small core crushing, and their high contribution to energy absorption.
