Abstract
- The book "Giving Back: Filipino America and the Politics of Diaspora Giving" by L. Joyce Zapanta Mariano explores the concept of giving back in the Filipino American diaspora. Mariano examines how the impulse for charity and philanthropy is deeply ingrained in Filipino culture and how it shapes the identity and relationship of Filipino Americans to their homeland. The author argues that this philanthropy is influenced by neoliberal governance and the historical context of American empire and labor exploitation in the Philippines. Mariano also discusses the depoliticization of diasporic philanthropy and highlights the importance of understanding the political realities of global capitalism, neoliberalism, and militarism in order to create meaningful change.
