Abstract

The British Society for Matrix Biology Spring Meeting 2024 covered a range of topics related to matrix study, including wound repair, basement membrane mechanics, and the effects of aging on the extracellular matrix. A study presented at the meeting investigated the role of cell migration in wound healing and potential therapies for tendon regeneration. Another study explored the effects of different factors on wound closure and gene expression in different cell types. A collection of summaries provided an overview of research studies on skeletal development, brain development, tissue shaping, and osteoarthritis. Another collection of abstracts summarized studies on cell-ECM interactions, inflammatory responses, and age-related modifications to the ECM. The text discussed studies on primary cilia in skeletal growth, pigmentation in alkaptonuria, and the interaction between chitinase-like proteins and collagen fibril formation. Other studies examined the impact of circadian rhythm on collagen biosynthesis, the trafficking of endocytosed collagen, and the effect of mechanical compression on chondrogenic potential. A collection of articles explored the effects of compression on chondrocytes, serine proteinase activity in osteoarthritis, intervertebral disc degeneration, collagen types in bone extracellular matrix, cartilage development and disease, and the interplay of mechano-chemical cues in bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells. These studies provide valuable insights into musculoskeletal research and its potential applications in understanding and treating various diseases. [Extracted from the article]
