Abstract

This article aims to reveal the reasons for the failure of labor parties in post-New Order Indonesia. Labor-associated parties have tried to contest the elections in the three early elections during the reform period. Unfortunately, none of these parties have won seats in parliament at the national level. With a massive number of workers in Indonesia, the availability of political opportunities to compete in elections, and with an extraordinary capacity to mobilize workers, parties that carry the name of labor should be able to gain success in the electoral sphere. Using the path dependence approach, this research seeks to show that the policies of the New Order regime in the field of labor in the form of single unionism, Pancasila industrial relations, negative attributions to labor political activists, and rewriting of labor history have resulted in the failure of labor parties to gain victory in the post-New Order elections.
