Abstract
- This document is a guideline from the British Society for Haematology on the treatment of cancer-associated venous thrombosis (CAT) in adults. It emphasizes the importance of considering factors such as bleeding risk, tumor site, oral medication suitability, drug interactions, and patient preferences when deciding on the most appropriate treatment. The guideline also provides recommendations for thromboprophylaxis in hospitalized patients, surgical patients, and ambulatory cancer outpatients. It highlights the high risk of VTE in patients with pancreatic cancer and multiple myeloma and discusses specific thromboprophylaxis strategies for these populations. The document also discusses the management of catheter-related thrombosis and the use of inferior vena cava filters. Thrombocytopenia, a condition characterized by low platelet count, is discussed, and it is suggested that anticoagulation should be continued in thrombocytopenic patients during the first 4-6 weeks after thrombosis. The document also discusses the treatment of recurrent VTE (venous thromboembolism) in cancer patients and suggests that supratherapeutic doses of LMWH (low molecular weight heparin) may be effective in reducing the risk of further recurrence.
