Abstract

The LOMLOE curricular reform emphasizes competency-based education through learning situations that foster students’ citizenship training. This paper analyses the opportunities offered by STE(A)M projects, designed within the framework of a teaching innovation program with university-school collaborative intervention. Promoting teacher updating, a training program was planned to offer didactic guidelines for creating learning situations using contextualization and inquiry-based science as didactic strategies. The environmental problems of a nearby context were selected to involve students in decision-making and citizen actions for sustainability, trying to develop their key competencies and critical thinking skills. We analysed the intervention with validated instruments, assessing the dimensions of critical thinking, the components of the STE(A)M treatment and the inquiry-based science capacities that can be involved in the knowledge and competencies of the students, establishing strengths and weaknesses and providing improvements for future learning situations.
